I hate taking medicine. I always have! When I was little I hated it because I couldn’t stand the taste of liquid medicines…they made me gag. I also hated swallowing pills…they made me gag too. Now I don’t like taking medicine because you don’t really know what’s in it. There’s always some new study showing how something-or-other in medicine is bad for you or “if you take this…” it can cause some other health frustration or what they like to call side effects. Its also unnatural to take medicine. I prefer to ride-it-out or use natural remedies whenever its possible. I’m not SO extreme that I’ll refuse medicine when I’m completely miserable; I definitely think there are some circumstances, and definitely some illnesses that medicine is essential for. Colds, not so much usually. I almost never take medicine for a cold. I actually rarely get them anymore! For awhile I was drinking lemon honey water every morning which I think really helped my immune system. I had slacked off with this though which is partially why I think I got sick this past week. Check out my list below on how I get over a cold and relieve symptoms without taking any medicine!

1. Congestion- Exhale Essential Oil Blend!
I love this blend when I’m sick! If you’ve ever had Vicks vapor rubbed on your chest to help clear your nose, this will be a familiar smell minus the chemicals. 🙂 It doesn’t smell exactly like Vicks, but it has the same nose-opening effect. When my nose is clogged up I rub this stuff around my nostrils and they open right up after smelling this! This blend contains eucalyptus, lemon, peppermint, ravensara, and tea tree. You could also diffuse this blend in a diffuser. If you apply it directly to your skin, make sure you dilute it in a carrier oil first. I have some diluted with grape seed oil in one of my roller bottles. You could also make a natural-Vicks rub by mixing some of this blend with coconut oil and rubbing it on your neck or chest. Now that I’m used to it, I put this oil right on my skin “neat” and it doesn’t bother me at all. It could burn you though if you have sensitive skin so be careful and don’t use it neat until you’re certain you won’t have any reactions or burning.
2. De-Germing- Thieves Essential Oil Blend!
This is the perfect oil for disinfecting. Whenever I’m sick or Ryan is sick, I diffuse thieves oil to disinfect the air. You can also make your own natural hand sanitizer with thieves oil by mixing a few drops into some real aloe vera gel. Or make a disinfecting spray with it with some water in a spray bottle! Remember that water and oil don’t mix so you must shake vigorously before spraying it. If you’ve never heard of thieves oil, its a blend of clove, lemon, rosemary, cinnamon and eucalyptus essential oils. I used to rub it on the bottoms of my feet every day to help support my immune system. Somewhere along the way I became a slacker and stopped doing it which is another thing contributing to my cold. This blend is absolutely essential! It kills those germs, and protects those around you from catching your bug! The couple days I was really sick, I diffused thieves oil in our bedroom right by our heads and Ryan didn’t catch my cold. 🙂
3. Overall Feeling Better- Gypsy Cold Care Tea!
This is the best tea ever!! I love Traditional Medicinals teas, and this one is my favorite. Somehow I always feel better after I drink a cup…Not kidding! I know so many other people that swear by it too. I wish I was more scientific to be able to describe how or why the ingredients in this tea help a cold, but I’m not. All I know is I love it, its delicious, and it always makes me feel a lot better than I did before I drank it. Some people claim it shortens their colds. I’m not sure if I’ve noticed this myself or not, but I only felt really crappy for 2 days before I started feeling much better, so who knows! Maybe it helped! Try it next time you’re sick.
4. Coughing- Pineapple Juice!
Pineapple juice is the best natural cough suppressant I’ve ever tried! Luckily I didn’t have a sore throat or a cough this past time I was sick, but last year I had a cough for awhile that was killer! I saw on Pinterest that drinking pineapple juice is five times more effective than cough syrup. I’m not sure if the math there is correct, and I won’t make that claim, but I will stand behind it as a great natural cough reliever! When I chugged a glass of pineapple juice in the morning, my coughing was minimal for several hours and seemed to start getting better the more I drank it. It was amazing, really. Next time I get a cough I’ll be buying some!
5. Getting To Sleep- Have a Drink, and Sleep on Your Back!
I feel so weird advocating drinking alcohol on my blog. Haha! I’m not much of an alcohol drinker, but love an occasional drink or glass of wine. NyQuil is the usual go-to for most people when they’re sick because it helps them get to sleep and stay asleep. Ryan always wants me to take some because when I’m up tossing and turning or sneezing and coughing, I keep him up too, which I hate. The last time I was sick he suggested I have a drink before bed because he knew I wouldn’t take NyQuil. I drank one glass of wine, put some Exhale essential oils on my nose to open up my airways, propped myself up with pillows, and I passed out within 10 minutes and I didn’t wake up until morning. It was a miracle! I slept so well and somehow was able to breath all night. Usually because I hate taking NyQuil, I’ll just rough it and end up getting a terrible night’s sleep. You need lots of sleep if you want your body to heal, so getting to sleep and staying asleep is essential to getting better faster. Don’t drink a lot, just one drink should do the trick and make you sleepy, especially if you’re feeling crappy already! Make sure to drink lots of water too, you don’t want to dehydrate yourself by doing this. If you don’t want to drink any alcohol, another thing that would help is taking some type of night time tea that has herbs that make you sleepy. I just bought some bed time tea and plan to try it soon!
After 2 days having a cold and using these tips, I started to feel much better. 2 days is nothing! I was pretty thrilled that I was able to kick my cold quickly without using any medication. Try it next time you get sick! And also remember to consume lots of vitamin C! Let me know if you have any other tips for braving a cold without any medicine!
