Hey y’all. Today’s post is a collaboration with my solidarity sister (its like a blogger pen pal) for the month! She writes the blog A Peachy Sonder, focusing on everyday life, tips, fashion, and blogging. Since she enjoys writing fashion posts, and I love posting about ways to save money, we thought we’d team up to write about how we dress cute on a budget, and look great without breaking the bank! A funny thing about me…I have kind of expensive taste when it comes to clothes, but I hate spending money on myself!! Its actually really difficult for me, which is why I love finding the best deals on clothes! I can’t believe the full retail price tags of most of the clothes I like. Its usually way way more than I’m willing to spend, so the majority of the clothes I buy are secondhand. When buying pre-loved clothing, you can find steals on like-new or barely worn items in the brands that you love without having to fork out too much money for them. Here are my top tips for getting the clothes I love at a fraction of the price! I also shared a few of my favorite items I’ve gotten under each tip because I love sharing the amazing deals I find…it makes me strangely proud! 😉
- Shop on Poshmark!
Poshmark is my absolute favorite place to shop for clothes now! Its an app on your phone where you can sell and buy clothes from other users. When I have something I don’t wear anymore, I’ll sell it on Poshmark! You take photos, set your price, put a description of your item, and other users will shop in your “closet!” You can search specific brands, you can enter key words for a particular thing you’re looking for, or just browse random items in your size. I set up my favorite brands in there so I frequently see items from my favorite brands that are in my size. You can make offers on items and negotiate prices too. When someone purchases an item from your closest, they cover the shipping costs, so all you do is print the label, package, the item, and leave it in the mail. Once the user receives the item in good condition you receive your earnings! You can use your earnings to shop, or have them deposited into your bank account. I use them to shop. 😉 Most of the things I buy on there come from earnings from selling something else! So its basically like trading your old stuff in for new stuff! I’ve found some amazing deals on practically new items, and even some brand new tags-still-on items! Here are some of my favorite amazing finds from Poshmark!
A- Jessica Simpson Green Tweed Coat– Retails for $189– I got it for $30! I LOVE this coat. I bought it in the summer because I saw it and fell in love with it and thought it was such a steal! It was just like new when I bought it too. I had to wait a few months to wear it, but it was worth it. I get compliments on this coat all the time. Its such a classy looking coat and I’m sure I’ll love wearing it for seasons to come.
B- Closet (from Modcloth) “Luck Be a Lady” Dress– Retails for $80– I got it for $25 with the tags still on it! I’m in love with this dress! Its funny that I found it on Poshmark because I just asked for this dress in black for Christmas, and Ryan got it for me. Now I have two of the same dress, one in black and one in grey. Its such a classy dress! I can’t wait for an occasion to wear it!
C- J. Crew Peach, Teal, & White Chino Shorts – All 3 pairs retail for $135- I got all three for $30. This was a bundle of shorts all in my size and in colors I liked in a brand I like, so I was pretty excited to find this listing! I wore these shorts all summer and I’ll definitely wear them next summer too. The great thing about buying brand name clothes used is that they are usually made really well so even if you’re not the first owner, they’ll still hold up! The shirt in this photo came from a thrift shop, which brings me to my second tip..
- Shop at Thrift Shops!
I love shopping at thrift shops. It takes a bit of patience to go through the crammed racks and sort through all the ugly stuff, but it can pay off when you find treasures that are really great! Check out a few of my thrift shop finds!
D- Black Skirt and Boutique Ruffle-y Button Down Top- I got both of these at Goodwill for probably $3-$4 each! They made for a cute anniversary date night outfit at the beach!
- Shop on Mercari!
Mercari is an app much like Poshmark! I like Poshmark a little more, but Mercari usually has cheaper stuff. Many people use both and list items cheaper on Mercari because the app is still new and they don’t take any commission yet! So you get 100% of your earnings, where with Poshmark, they take a small percentage. So sometimes you’ll see the same item from the same person for a few dollars cheaper on Mercari! I have only gotten a few things on there so far like this:
E- Ann Taylor LOFT Striped Beaded Shirt– I’m not sure how much this was brand new because its no longer on their website, but similar tops retail for $40-$50 each. That’s so crazy to me! I paid $10 for this shirt, and it was practically new, only worn a handful of times before.
- Hand-Me-Downs from Friends!
I’ve had some great hand-me-downs given to me! Growing up, once my little sister got to be my size, we would always share clothes so our closets were practically doubled because we could wear the same size in everything but shoes. Since my sister and I have been apart, I’ve randomly had friends and random acquaintances give me clothing that has been mostly in my size. If you have a friend, family member or acquaintance getting rid of clothing, make sure to go through it! Something that they no longer like or fit into could be gold to you! I have a lot of hand-me-down clothes now from some of my favorite brands, like Lucky Brand jeans, Loft, Gap, Banana Republic, Old Navy, J. Crew and more. Here’s a favorite!
E- Loft Sleeveless Polkadot Top- Retails for $30-$50 for similar tops on their site. I got it for free from a friend! Originally I didn’t think this was my style, but after wearing it once I was in love with it. Accepting hand-me-downs from others forces you to branch out and find new things you probably wouldn’t have tried on before that you might love. 🙂
Here are a few additional rules I typically go by for shopping that help me save money in the long run:
–Know when to splurge! Shoes are something I usually splurge on. Shoes can be so expensive, but if you buy high quality shoes, they will last you for years and years! Same with a nice heavy winter coat. My heavy coat is at least 6 or 7 years old. My parents got it for me and it has held up and still looks great. I still love it! When you decide to splurge on something expensive make sure its something that will hold up to lots of wear.
–Buy mostly classic pieces that aren’t going to be out of style after one season. I have always thought myself to have a very plain sense of style, but now I prefer to think of it as classic, which sounds better. Haha 😉 I try to stay away from certain crazy patterns or super trendy fads because I know they’re not going to stay in style for long. This is definitely a personal preference thing though. If you like following the latest trends in fashion, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that! If you want to be able to get multiple seasons out of your clothes, its good to keep it classic though! Solid colors, and stripes are two things I love because they never go out of style. You can also always buy more generic classic tops/pants and accessorize with trendier items too. I don’t want to look back at photos of myself years from now and wonder “What was I thinking wearing thattttt??” So that’s one other perk of lookin’ classy! (I know that I’ll probably still say that about some things though, its inevitable. ;))
