It felt to good to finally type that blog post title! This post has been a long time coming. I have been trying to make my own makeup for over a year now with only minimal success. I just saw in my Facebook memories that just over a year ago I made my own face powder using things like arrowroot powder, cocoa powder, and various spices. While this was a small success, it was more of a translucent powder and didn’t offer any coverage like a decent makeup should so I didn’t use it much. I also dabbled in using beet root powder to make my own blush which was also very unsuccessful. I wasted lots of ingredients trying to come up with a recipe I would actually like and use but now I have a recipe I love and use daily and I’m so happy to share it with you. 🙂
I follow a lot of natural living blogs and several of them had recipes for natural foundation, powder, blush, etc. using these kinds of edible ingredients but I honestly just wasn’t happy with them. The beet root powder blush looked exactly like blush but it didn’t stick to my skin and it was transparent! It would sit on top of my skin and brush right off. This was my big issue with all the recipes I found and tried. They wouldn’t stick to my skin and were too transparent to cover up any unevenness.
After a year of on and off trying, I finally came up with something that works! I experimented, read ingredients lists for natural makeups I liked and came up with my own version that I can make very cheaply. It offers coverage and stays on my face! Yay! The best part is how simple it is! You only need a few ingredients that once you buy, you’ll be able to make your own makeup for years! Check it out!
This makes a small container of pale peachy-white colored powder. I would say its pretty pale. Cause I’m pretty pale. Haha! I explain the color and transparency of each ingredient so you can experiment with finding your perfect shade!

Ingredients:
1 tsp non nano zinc oxide– This is an opaque white powder made from a mineral. You may remember me talking about it in my homemade natural sunscreen recipe for its SPF properties! Making sure it is non-nano is very important. Nano particles are broken up to be SO small that they get absorbed by your skin. Zinc oxide isn’t good when its absorbed into your body, so by getting non-nano zinc, the particles are too large to be absorbed by the skin, and they just sit on top. This is what make the powder opaque instead of transparent!
3/8 tsp arrowroot powder– This is a translucent white powder used in cooking in place of cornstarch for thickening. You could also use non GMO corn starch if you don’t have arrowroot powder. Arrowroot powder also makes an excellent dry shampoo for those with blonde hair!
2 pinches bronze mica powder– This is pure pigment made from minerals. It is naturally sparkly, and a little tiny bit of this stuff goes a LONG way so be very careful to only add a tiny pinch at a time!
2 pinches gold mica powder– Use same cautions with the gold mica!
2 pinches rhassoul clay– This is literally just clay from the earth…like dirt! But it has some amazing benefits for skin, and is naturally a matte brown color. It is slightly opaque but also semi transparent. It is very absorbing so it can keep your skin from looking oily. When used as a mask or cleanser it is amazing at removing impurities and toxins from the skin and keeping it toned and soft. I added the rhassoul clay for its color, and to offset some of the sparkly-ness from the mica powder, but as you can see it has some other great benefits as well!

Here’s a crappy phone picture from when I was making it! See how shiny! It also gives you a bit of an idea for what I mean when I say “pinch!”
To make:
-Add your zinc and arrowroot powder to a small sealable container. Put the lid on and shake it up really good! (If you’d rather use a spice grinder to get the makeup perfectly mixed you can do that, but I didn’t want to make a huge mess so I just kept it all in the container I wanted to use and it mixed together quite well.)
-Start adding your pigments in- one pinch at a time, shaking the mixture up each time so you can get a better judge for the color. Test out the makeup as you go so you will be able to match it with your skin.
That’s pretty much it! Keep track of your measurements so you will be able to quickly make more next time! Once you find your color, making it again will be a breeze.
Don’t have the time, energy or money to make your own natural makeup? If not, then I highly recommend checking out LuLu Beans Naturals! This is a small family business run by a friend of mine I met through photography.  She didn’t ask me to share this or anything, but I have used their products and I highly recommend them! They use all natural ingredients, they carry lots of colors of eye shadows, and several shades of mineral foundation, and they are extremely affordable. They also carry things like sugar scrubs, lotions, face wash, and more if you want natural options for those things but don’t want to make your own. Click the link above to be taken to their shop!
I hope you enjoy the natural makeup recipe!!  Subscribe below or follow me on social media so you don’t miss the recipe for natural blush I’ll be sharing next week! 🙂
Really interesting! I didn’t know you could make this!
OMG! I need to make this. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for the recipe. Make out out there is full of chemicals, so this is very refreshing to see natural make up anyone can make at home.
This is amazing! I love seeing that you can make an all-natural version so easily!
