Hey y’all! Today I’m sharing with you a DIY health and beauty product I’ve been using for the past few months, homemade deodorant cream! You might be thinking, “wait a second, didn’t you share a deodorant recipe already?!” I did! Last year I shared my 2 Ingredient Miracle Deodorant Spray recipe and absolutely RAVED about how amazing it is. And I wasn’t lying. I used my magnesium deodorant spray for a whole spring and summer through the Tennessee heat without issues, and then something weird started to happen. It started to loose its effectiveness over time! By late summer/early fall I was having to reapply the spray deodorant several times a day and I just kept noticing how it wasn’t the same as when I first started using it. I started chatting with some ladies in a natural living Facebook group I’m in and many of the ladies said that they had similar issues with their homemade deodorants too. They worked amazingly for a few months and gradually stopped being as effective. This got us thinking about the importance of switching up your products every now and then to keep our bodies guessing! I switched my deodorant over to a new homemade option and started seeing the same amazing effectiveness that I came to love with the magnesium spray deodorant! It is my personal assumption/hypothesis that when we use the same thing for too long it looses its effectiveness and we need to try something new for awhile! I’ve come to this conclusion just solely by my personal experiences and after talking to the other ladies who have had similar issues. Have you ever noticed this with your homemade personal care products!? I’m very curious, so if this sounds like you, let me know in the comments!! If after awhile this deodorant starts to lose its effectiveness I plan on switching back to the magnesium spray. This is all very trial and error as you can see! When an issue comes up you just roll with it until you find something that works great for you! Okay, on to the recipe!

This recipe is very customizable, as most of my DIY recipes are! The base is similar to many of my other lotions and creams. Coconut oil and Shea butter! I like mixing them half and half because coconut oil by itself can easily become thin and melty, or hard and brittle depending on the temperature in your house, and shea butter alone is pretty thick and pasty. Mixing them 50/50 is a consistency I enjoy more, but you could also use just one or the other!
The active ingredients in this are baking soda, for neutralizing odors, tea tree oil, for killing bacteria on the skin that contribute to icky smells, and lavender oil, because it smells nice and hides the tea tree smell a bit. I don’t love the tea tree oil smell by itself.
- Coconut oil
- Shea butter
- Baking Soda
- Tea tree essential oil
- Lavender essential oil (or other oil of choice for scent!)
- Get a small glass jar or container and fill it about half way with coconut oil and half way with shea butter. For size reference, your container should hold anywhere from 1/2 cup to 3/4 cup of your "base" oils! If you're making a larger batch, adjust the following amounts accordingly. If your oils/butters are soft, just mix them. If they are harder, microwave it for a few seconds until the oils and butters are mixable.
- Add about 1 tsp of baking soda and mix thoroughly.
- Add about 10 drops tea tree essential oil and 10 drops of your scented oil of choice.
- Mix everything well!
- Apply about a pea sized amount to your underarms 1-2 times a day or as needed.
Since this is oil based, try to give yourself a few minutes for it to dry before getting dressed. If it is still wet or not completely soaked in when you get dressed, it could potentially stain your clothes. Just a fair warning! I typically shower at night and apply it after and wear old tshirts or tank tops to bed so I’ve never had an issue with staining. Even when I apply it under regular clothes, I apply such a small amount that it soaks in quickly and I’ve never noticed any oily stains on my shirts! But if this is a concern of yours just be sure to apply it a few minutes before getting dressed. Hope you like this simple recipe! Using natural deodorant is so important because commercial options contain SO many harmful ingredients that you don’t want on your body. These toxins can also cause you to have MORE body odor than you would normally have otherwise. I have found that since switching to natural deodorant options, I need deodorant less than I used to. I obviously still use it and especially need it on a hot day spent outside or when working out, but my dependence on it has definitely decreased which is amazing. Let me know what you think!
