Hey y’all! I’m so excited to continue my homebirth stories series with Mya’s speedy homebirth story! When I read this one my jaw dropped! I couldn’t believe it. This just goes to show how different labor and delivery is for everyone! Her experience was amazing and I’m so excited for y’all to read it! I met Mya through Instagram! She enjoys a healthy lifestyle with her two girls and husband. Follow her journey here on Instagram! Here’s her story!
My mindset shifted after my first. Having had my first in the hospital, I knew I didn’t want to birth that way again. Between the interruptions, lack of food and liquids, unnatural breaking of my water and so on, I knew I needed to stop thinking, “Well what if…” Those scenarios only put fear into me and I recognized it wasn’t helping in my experience and the enjoyment of birth. I realized I could do it without the hospital because simply put…I just COULD. Women have given birth for centuries and our bodies are completely capable. It was my mind that needed to catch up. It was my husband’s mind that needed to catch up. You know that we’re the only mammals to doubt our ability to birth!! So yes! We both needed to believe that a low risk pregnancy with no complications with our first would most likely be the case with our second. So we toured a local birth center and after the orientation, decided to have a home birth (with the midwife coming to us).
Fast forward to the day AFTER my due date, I picked up my daughter from preschool experiencing cramps. We made one stop before heading home and by now I had been to the bathroom twice to release my bowels. We got home, I warmed up a small heating pad and tried to get comfortable on the couch. I wasn’t contracting yet, but knew it would eventually lead up to that, so I texted my husband that he may not be going to work the next day. He arrived home around 6:15 and began to rub my lower back. I then walked to the bathroom because I felt the need to go release my bowels again and so I walked fairly slowly to the bathroom. I sat down and went to the bathroom, when all of a sudden my water broke while on the toilet and I began contracting very frequently and very intensely (this was partly due to my date consumption-done on purpose to reduce delivery time).…our second daughter was coming!!! AND FAST!!! All of the Bradley Method reading, pelvic exercises, healthy eating and supplementing, mindset/affirmation preparation were being put to use for this moment. I worked on breathing through each contraction, my husband ran upstairs to grab some home birthing supplies and my daughter (4 y/o at the time) came in. Crowning on the toilet, my husband assisted me up so I could go into a squat position. I went down and her head popped out. “There’s Makayla!”, my oldest exclaimed. The next contraction pushed her right out and there we sat on the floor of our half bathroom waiting for our midwife to arrive. I held her against my stomach for some skin to skin (shirt up because I was fully clothed still haha), suctioned her (although it wasn’t even needed-she immediately started crying and nothing was suctioned out when we tried) and we sat there as a family. My husband went to look at the time and took a few pictures when he came back into the bathroom.
It wasn’t how we envisioned our home birth going, but we wouldn’t change it! You guys! It was AMAZING! The physical, emotional, mental preparation treated me well in this intense 10 minute period of our night. Think of it this way….Nobody goes into a half marathon not having prepared. You don’t expect to feel capable of accomplishing much going in to the run cold turkey. Prepare yourself. Physically, emotionally, mentally, spiritually. That preparation will catapult you into the single most empowering moment you will ever experience. Because I had prepared myself, our unassisted home birth was amazing and something we now cherish as a family. So believe me when I say this, You CAN do it mama! You ARE capable!
