Hey y’all! Its been forever since I’ve posted again! (So sorry!) But I promised I’d only post when I had something worthwhile to share! And now I do! I also must admit that my pregnancy has been a major distraction away from the blog! Instead of experimenting in the kitchen or researching all things natural-living-related, I’ve been looking at cute baby clothes, planning our trip to Alaska, etc. –BUT I recently read an article that really grabbed my attention and had to share it with you guys. It had to do with gluten sensitivity and gluten intolerance. Is gluten really the problem or is it something else in the wheat?! I’m sure you’ve all heard about the recent gluten-free diet craze, and I’m sure you even know someone with a gluten allergy. This article, The Real Reason Wheat is Toxic (its not the gluten) was shared in a Facebook group I’m a part of and it really made a ton of sense to me! I’ll encourage you to read the article in full, as she goes into much more detail with lots of research, but I will summarize it below!
The author of the article discusses several things about gluten intolerance that don’t make much sense. There are stories of individuals with gluten intolerance eating pasta on an Italian vacation and experiencing no symptoms of their allergy. Other stories were from parents who were confused why their children would only react to wheat sometimes, but not always. She also described how her own husband had no reaction to any wheat products that she prepared for their family at home, but would experience symptoms of gluten sensitivity from eating just one roll out at a restaurant. Something just wasn’t adding up!!
After talking to some friends who were very familiar with wheat harvesting procedures and doing a bit of research on her own she made a shocking discovery about what sets apart the wheat grown here in the United States. I’m not surprised at all by this, but huge amounts of pesticides such as Round Up are applied to wheat before harvest which kills the plant and makes for an earlier, easier harvest. The chemicals are totally saturating the crop! The chemical glyphosate from these pesticides is regularly showing up in tests done on bread and wheat products here in the US.
Anytime we eat conventional wheat products we’re consuming this chemical which is so horrible for us!! It is linked to so many health problems including, but not limited to gastrointestinal disorders, diabetes, heart disease, autism, infertility, cancer, and more. What is perhaps even worse, is that the effects of regularly consuming this chemical are very gradual. Most people don’t realize the harm it is causing the body until it is too late. Some people, such as those with “gluten intolerance” do experience symptoms of consuming this chemical, but the scarier health effects aren’t noticed right away.. This is why it is so important to avoid toxic wheat products!
My Personal Observations
I recently noticed some things in myself that perfectly describe what the author of this article talked about in the beginning. I have never shown symptoms of gluten intolerance that I’m aware of until just recently. There have always been certain products I don’t make from scratch that I buy from the store. Wheat products are a big one! I buy pasta, I buy hotdog and hamburger buns, and I occasionally buy a loaf of bread. I buy organic whenever I can but the stores don’t always offer organic bread so I stick with traditional products when I do buy it if I can’t find organic.
Recently, due to being more apathetic and lazy than usual, (I blame pregnancy for this!!) I purchased frozen biscuits for quick easy breakfasts! I love making biscuits and usually make my own frozen biscuits out of my pesticide-free wheat flour, but as I said, pregnancy made me more apathetic and lazy. We’ve been much busier at work as well so I figured, what the heck, I was just going to buy the bag of frozen biscuits and make life easy on everyone. (Shame, shame, I know. ;)) We enjoyed these on and off for a couple weeks. Egg biscuits, sausage gravy and biscuits, bacon egg biscuits, biscuits with jam…Yummm. But I started noticing those little tiny bumps on my upper arms! You know, the ones that supposedly mean you’re gluten intolerant? I thought it was a little weird but assumed maybe it was a hormonal pregnancy thing and I brushed it off. It was very shortly after that I read this article and it all clicked in my head. We started making other breakfast options and the bumps totally left my arms. Pretty crazy! I’m convinced I was overdoing it with the traditional wheat products and my body was reacting accordingly. From now on I’m taking the extra time to make our easy frozen biscuits from scratch using my healthy clean wheat!!
I’m on a mission now to round up easy from-scratch recipes for things I can’t usually find organic options for, such as hamburger buns! I’ll be sure to share any great recipes I find or come up with so you too can be sure you’re consuming clean healthy wheat products free from pesticides!
If you have any great recipes you think I’d like, please share! Do you have gluten sensitivity or gluten intolerance? Let me know your thoughts in the comments, I’d love to hear more opinions on this issue! It really fascinates me and I hope by sharing this that I can help others become aware of this issue and make healthier decisions for their family!!
